An inspiring video – ‘A Polite Revolution’ – from activists in Barnet shows how an alliance between occupy, trades unions and local people can make an impact that goes beyond the sum of the parts. Faced with the closure of Friern Barnet library, the building was occupied and kept open by local people. This forced negotiations with the local council who on February 5th backed down and agreed to grant a licensee for the continued running of the library. A campaign statement says: “Whilst our campaign has always maintained a need for a public service library, with a qualified librarian as the best option, we hope this can still be achieved with further negotiations from all interested parties.”
